Me and The Others

Friends

I have to talk quickly because we are picking them up at 10, but I wanted you to know that our long time friends the Lauridsen’s  are here to visit they’re leaving on the 22 so we don’t have much time! They got here  yesterday but had just got off a 10 hour flight. Bye!

Commentmainia

Thank you all for your comments, my dad was worried that I wasn’t getting them because I didn’t respond, no I have read them, but when you comment on one of my posts I get a  email. I then read it there and just don’t reply. That is why I am making this post I made this post to thank you for your comments, they make me a better writer (and a writer who know WHAT to write) and it makes me feel more connected to the world!

Thank all for you comments!

Did you know we have over 50 comments!

Existing

I would have piercings by now, but it turns out you need valid ID for that. The funny thing about a driver’s license is that they’re hard to come by when you’re working all the days you could get even a permit. Passport? Well, it helps if you can find your old one. Birth certificate? How about an abstract? Ok, you’ve got student ID at least? Because obviously it’ll be useful and thus worth the trouble of standing in line for three seconds for the photo.

Nothing? As one of my friends put it, “how are you so bad at existing?”

Anyway, my semester just finished this week. As did the drama with the Stop Online Piracy Act, which is the subject of my first paid blog post. Meaning now I can put the finishing details in it, and toss that thing up.

Interestingly I’ve had a somewhat different experience from Anton, regarding the fridge and refilling. You see, Visa has some security issues right now, so I temporarily didn’t have a card, and that became longer than anticipated when Bay Federal decided to try sending my new card to the Majors st address even though I registered the move with them directly, as well as the USPS. During that lapse, my friend Theo’s mother sent him to my house with food. Then a week later, I was in the car with her and Theo both, as she was dropping us off at my house.

“Hey, do you mind if we make a quick detour?” she asks.
“Not at all!” I reply.

Turns out what she had in mind was stopping at Safeway, grabbing a cart, grabbing stuff for nachos, and turning to me to ask “what else do you want?”

So. I’ve been well cared for!

London’s Manly Fashion

This one’s about the men!

Most of the places I’ve been I’ve seen men wear, what? T-shirts, and jeans, only if it’s a fancy meeting they’ll wear a black suit some times a tux If you walk by a bar in Santa Cruz you see a couple of men it wearing working clothes, jeans button up shirt. Women were the fashionistas. Here in the work district 9 1/2 the men you’ll walk by  will be in a suit, AND they are the fashion, some have a blue tie, or pink one, or green, or purple, or 3 1/2 hours later, some have velvet lined jackets, ect. ect. ect. One day we were walking to work and we must have walked by 5 mens clothing stores on the way, no wonder dad thinks he needs a new suit!

A Subway Story

I have a bit of a delay on my blog posts about our adventures, but here is another story from New York.

After several days walking everywhere and of Eliana asking if she can take the subway, I agreed as we were going from 45th Street to 86th Street, and 41 blocks is a lot even for my sturdy walking girls.

The walked through Grand Central Station, it was a bit confusing but generally uneventful.  We did visit the train museum.  Eliana got a pen with a retractible pull out map of the subway & bus system.  It is so small that I can’t read it without glasses.

The weather turned rainy in the afternoon and our leaving the Metropolitan Museum of Art was poorly timed as it was 5 pm, but we wanted to get as much time as possible at the Met and still be back in time for our Broadway theater tickets for Mamma Mia and a bite of dinner before.

Mamma Mia at Winter Garden Broadway Theater

Here is the story of how I managed getting myself and two children onto a New York Subway train during the evening commute on a rainy night.  The rain is important because it means that even more people are on the subway rather than walking.

The already full train pulled into the station.  Two people got out and a whole bunch wanted to get in.  I put my left foot into the train, standing sideways with my right still on the platform.  Then I shoved Emeline onto the train.  I turned back to the platform and grabbed Eliana by the front of her pink puffy down coat.  Then I pushed backwards into crush of people on the train pulling Eliana with me.  There wasn’t enough room for one person, let alone two people, at least in a normal social setting.   I glanced back to make sure I still could see Emeline. I turned back toward Eliana and her eyes were as large as dinner plates, as she realized that only her front 1/2 was in the train so far.  She was afraid the doors would close on her, not an unreasonable fear, considering. Suddenly the guy over my right shoulder, behind me reaches over and between two people to grab his friend who is still on the platform behind and just to the side of Eliana.  The man grabbed his friend’s backpack shoulder straps and literally yanked his friend into the train, compressing everyone and their puffy winter coats. However, more importantly he draws Eliana the rest of the way into the train but still very close to the door.  Eliana is swallowed alive in winter coats.  I held a frame over her with my arms to keep people from crushing her.

Stock picture, since there was no way I could take one.

I turned my head to the guy who’d pulled his friend into the train and said, “you’ve been on the trains in Japan haven’t you.”  He looked at me with a puzzled expression and said, “Yes.”

Emeline was also way beyond her comfort zone in the crush of people.  I too was nervous because I didn’t have a hold of her.  She wasn’t far but there were several people between us. I made sure the people around us knew that she was mine. I talked a nice woman who was holding the upper hand rail and standing near Emeline, into letting Emeline stand somewhat under her and between the people sitting, it was a little more protected. They were happy to help.

The next tricky part was not getting swept off the train at the next few stops, but within a few stops the people started to thin.  It was still took effort to move, but Eliana and I were able to maneuver closer to Emeline and I had a hold of both girls again.  Despite the insane crush of people, everyone was very civil, kind and looked out for the children.

A bit of drama and humanity on display in the New York Subway.

You click your seat belt at least 5 times a day (usually). Wwwweeeeellllllll I haven’t clicked a seat belt for over 2 WEEKS!!!!

London & Harry Potter

Emeline at platform 9 3/4

We didn’t come to London to do Harry Potter stuff, but we are very fond of Harry Potter stories, so it has been thrilling to stumble upon and seek out various landmarks. First there is Kings Cross station with Platform 9 3/4.

Eliana at Platform 9 3/4

Then there is Hogsmead, the town they visit to get butter beer this is Leadenhall Market in real London. While at Leadenhall market there was a woman with a few owls, talking about owls and the risk they are at from the loss of their habitats.   (I am going to go find the picture of the owls and add it here. )

Finally we walked by Privit Drive just a couple of days ago. It was early evening and mostly dark already. Emeline pointed out how weird it felt that the street light was flickering. I said it looks like when Hagrid came to get Harry Potter from Privit Drive the first time. Emeline says, “Mom, that was Privit Drive we just passed.” I didn’t get a photo of the street sign that night, but i’ll try to remember when we pass it again.
